Meals on Wheels Tour

Monday, October 23rd, some of our Friends, and friends of Friends, had a guided tour of the new Meals on Wheels facility on Danbury Street, just north of Loop 410.  Wow!

The facility is beautiful.  It's spacious, quiet, and well lighted.  The offices are well-equipped with modern technology, the spic-and-span kitchen is industrial grade, and the warehousing is extensive and modern.  This looks like a great place to work.

Mow Fact: While MoW nominally follows a meal-of-the-day menu plan, they actually prepare 3 different meals:  the scheduled meal of the day, "backup" frozen meals for days with prep or distribution glitches, and shelf-stable "emergency" boxes for serious emergency or disaster situations.

MoW Fact:  Ann Wimberly of MoW tells us

"shelf stable boxes ... are traditionally items that don’t require electricity to enjoy and have a longer shelf life. For example, tuna packets, Chef Boyardee canned pasta, peanut butter, crackers, juice, shelf stable milk, raisins, and apple sauce  are some of the items often included.
