2022-2027 Bond Program Update
The second public input meeting for Comanche Lookout Park improvements was held on October 23rd, Monday evening, from 6:30 to 8:00pm, and was very well attended. Mark Wittlinger from SA Parks and Recreation and a architectural consultant presented a prioritized list of improvements along with their estimated costs. (The priorities were those set by a poll of neighbors and park patrons at the first public input meeting.)
The Park budget from this bond is $1,250,000. Quite a bit, but not enough for every desired improvement (no surprise there). These are the improvements that fit within budget
- basic restoration of the Tower to prevent deterioration and simplify future maintenance
- interpretive signs for landmarks and features of the park
- better way-finding markers for trails
- resurfacing the main loop trail with long-lasting concrete
- full-featured public restrooms at the Nacogdoches Road parking lot
- expanded parking at the Nacogdoches Road lot, to include a bus area
- 24 more trash cans distributed throughout the park
- fencing around the playground structure at the Semmes Library entrance (although this appears to be done!)
A major improvement that will probably not fit into the budget is the addition of a hilltop pavillion, which was estimated to cost between $300,000 and $400,000. In the event that funds do come available, this would be constructed in the empty space between the Najo Jam Art Installation and the old building foundation on the hilltop.
